Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd has been deeply involved in the Admiralty Law for over half a century.  We have tried cases involving collision, allision, damaged cargo and apportionment of the fault among vessel operators, stevedores, inland transporters and terminal operators for cargo damage, maritime liens, and personal injury.  In addition, we have extensive experience in defending Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation (LHWCA) claims.

MATTERS INCLUDE

  • Representing a company against the United States in a case interpreting a special statute enacted by Congress to benefit ship repairers with contracts to repair U.S. Naval vessels.  
  • Successfully defended one party in a two-vessel collision on inland navigable waters, in a case involving the issue of collision liability under federal statutory and admiralty law.  
  • Successfully defended stevedores in State and Federal courts against property damage claims, including cargo claims, and serious personal injury.
  • Litigated in Federal courts priority issues with respect to maritime liens and preferred ship mortgages.
  • Represented vessel owners and operators on issues of common and private carriage as well as towage.
